The School Counselor works with students, teachers, colleagues and parents individually and in groups to support academic growth, personal and social skills, college readiness and career exploration.

The School Counselor is a member of a two-person counseling department, and reports to the Director of Counseling.
Counselors work primarily with students to provide individual support for their social, emotional and psychological needs.
General
Responsibilities:
Develop and foster effective relationships with students and provide short term and crisis counseling for students Refer students with significant or long-term concerns for therapy/counseling Maintain communication with outside professionals with informed consent Assist in the development of advisory programs that address academic, personal and social/emotional components Track academic performance of all students and intervene when concerns are noted Utilize data from PowerSchool to maintain up-to-date computer documentation of grades Provide basic study skills, time management assistance, etc.
Consult with the learning specialists in the St.
Mary's Resource Program and make referrals to providers of psycho-educational assessments.
Meet with students, teachers and parents regarding issues of concern Encourage and support students in exploration of strengths, limitations and new activities Refer students to school-based academic resources Ease transition for transfer students and students with social difficulties Meet with students for course selection and development/review of four-year plan Attend local professional counselor meetings offered through various professional organizations Maintain student files and ensure confidentiality Maintain records of phone contacts, written correspondence, and student office visits Communicate changes of status and student concerns with faculty and administration Serve on school committees as needed Perform other related duties as needed Job Requirements Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling or Social Work or a related field Must have professional experience working as a school counselor at the high school level Experience in teaching health, wellness, and life skills topics to high school students Strong knowledge of adolescent development, mental health disorders and learning issues Strong cross-cultural competencies and a commitment to inclusive and equitable practices Must be ale to work effectively with students, staff and parents from diverse backgrounds Must have excellent written and oral communication skills Must have strong counseling and mentoring skills Must demonstrate a high level of integrity and professionalism and contribute to a positive work environment Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel Must be available before and after school, 7:
